Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Authorities in Jakarta are uncovering details surrounding stabbing incident of a teenager who fatally stabbed his father and grandmother and injured his mother in a shocking family attack. The tragic incident occurred early Saturday, November 30, 2024, in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta.

According to Kompas, The South Jakarta Metropolitan Police revealed new findings after questioning the suspect’s mother, identified as AP (40), who survived the attack despite multiple stab wounds.

“We interviewed the suspect’s mother, who answered 30 questions during the investigation,” South Jakarta Police spokesperson AKP Nurma Dewi said on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

Family Time Before the Attack

Authorities disclosed that the suspect, identified as MAS, had spent the evening with his family, sharing a meal and joking around, just hours before the stabbing incident occur.

“Before they went to bed, the family ate together and laughed. There were no signs this tragedy would happen,” Nurma added.

AP reportedly could not believe her son was responsible for killing her husband and mother until police presented CCTV footage of the attack.

History of Psychiatric Visits

Investigators also revealed that MAS had previously been taken to a psychiatrist by his mother. AP sought professional help after teachers reported that her son frequently fell asleep during class.

“It started with a teacher’s report about MAS sleeping during lessons. His mother then took him to a psychiatrist to address the issue,” Nurma said.

MAS reportedly visited a psychiatrist four times, though the exact diagnosis remains unclear. Police have since requested further information from the psychiatrist who treated him.

“We will examine the psychologist who evaluated MAS at a hospital in South Jakarta,” Nurma stated.

The Stabbing Incident

The stabbing incident occurred in the family’s two-story home. According to police, MAS killed his father, APW (40), and grandmother, RM (69), before turning the knife on his mother.

He used a kitchen knife that he had retrieved earlier. AP survived the assault by jumping over the house gate and escaping, despite her serious injuries. She was later taken to Fatmawati General Hospital.

After the stabbings, MAS tried to fled the scene but was caught shortly after by security guards in the housing complex.

Claim of Hearing Whispers

During police questioning, MAS reportedly admitted to hearing “whispers” that compelled him to stab his family members. The teenager told police he believed the act would ensure his parents’ entry into heaven.

“He said he felt burdened by his parents and wanted to take that burden away so they could go to heaven,” South Jakarta Police Chief Kombes Ade Rahmat Idnal explained on Monday, December 9, 2024.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are continuing to investigate the underlying motives behind MAS’s actions. The police are awaiting results from forensic psychologists with the Indonesian Forensic Psychology Association (Apsifor) to gain further insights into the teenager’s mental state.

MAS has been officially named a suspect under Indonesian law, categorized as a minor in conflict with the law. Due to his age, MAS has been placed in a juvenile detention facility while legal proceedings continue.
