ASEAN Summit to Discuss Five Points of Consensus for Myanmar

Jakarta – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said the issue of Myanmar will be discussed specifically at the 42nd ASEAN Summit or ASEAN Summit 2023 in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

“It will be specifically discussed, but our reference remains for Myanmar,” President Jokowi was quoted as saying in a press statement by ANTARA on Sunday (7/5/2023).

The reference in resolving the issue, the President continued, is the five-point consensus, namely calling for a cessation of violence, dialogue with all stakeholders, appointing special envoys to facilitate mediation and dialogue, allowing ASEAN to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar citizens, and allowing ASEAN special envoys to visit and meet with stakeholders in Myanmar.

“Our reference is still the five-point concensus, but it must be a reference with dialog, because in my opinion sanctions are not a solution,” Jokowi said.

Jokowi hopes that the conflict there can be resolved soon. Then, he said humanitarian assistance must reach the people of Myanmar.

“Third, dialog is important, which is active not only here, but also in Myanmar itself must be active to play a role in the dialogs that we conduct,” he said.

It is known, Jokowi and First Lady Iriana arrived at Komodo Airport, Labuan Bajo, Sunday, at 15.32 Wita, using the presidential plane. Upon arrival at Komodo Airport, Jokowi and Iriana were welcomed by the Tiba Meka Dance which will be a welcoming dance for the 2023 ASEAN Summit delegates.
