Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — In a significant move to enforce discipline within Indonesia’s police force, Kapolda Metro Jaya, Inspector General (Irjen) Karyoto, announced the dismissal of 31 officers for various forms of misconduct. The decision came after an internal review and an official ceremony held on January 2, 2025, at the Balai Pertemuan Metro Jaya building in South Jakarta. The dismissed officers represent a range of violations, from drug abuse to sexual misconduct, and the action underscores the Indonesian National Police’s growing efforts to address corruption and misconduct within its ranks.

Breaking Down the Dismissals:

According to Irjen Karyoto, the dismissed officers include personnel from different sectors within the Polda Metro Jaya. The breakdown shows that 5 officers were dismissed from the Polda Metro Jaya headquarters, while 26 officers were from various district police forces within the Polda Metro Jaya’s jurisdiction.

These dismissals are part of a broader push by the police force to uphold higher standards of ethics and discipline. Irjen Karyoto emphasized that the dismissals are essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring that the police force operates with integrity. “This move is part of our ongoing efforts to reform and cleanse our ranks,” Karyoto stated.

Reasons for Dismissal:

The officers who were dismissed faced a variety of charges, reflecting the broad spectrum of issues within the police force. The list of violations includes:

  • Eight officers were dismissed for involvement in illegal drug activities, a growing concern among law enforcement agencies worldwide.
  • Fifteen officers were fired for desertion, reflecting a failure to meet the professional standards expected of law enforcement personnel.
  • One officer was implicated in a criminal case involving embezzlement or fraud, signaling issues with corruption.
  • Four officers faced dismissal for engaging in extramarital affairs, breaching ethical standards.
  • Two officers were involved in illegal marriages, commonly known as “nikah siri” (unregistered marriages), which are prohibited by Indonesian law.
  • One officer was found to be involved in a case related to homosexuality, which remains a sensitive issue in some parts of Indonesia, despite the growing global acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights.

The Call for Integrity and Discipline:

Irjen Karyoto expressed regret over the dismissals, stressing that these cases are a disappointment not just for the officers involved, but for the entire police force. “I want to remind all members of the police force about the importance of maintaining integrity and fulfilling our responsibility as public servants,” he said. Karyoto highlighted that joining the police force is a significant achievement for many young Indonesians and their families, as not everyone can pass the rigorous selection process to become a police officer. He urged his colleagues to uphold the trust that the public has placed in them and to be role models for society.

The police chief also reiterated the need for commanders and heads of units within the force to ensure stronger supervision over their personnel. Karyoto emphasized that greater vigilance and accountability will be key in preventing further violations in the future. “We must work together to ensure that no one else falls into misconduct.”

The Bigger Picture:

This mass dismissal of officers comes as part of a broader effort by the Indonesian National Police to clean up its ranks and restore public confidence. Despite challenges, such as the complex socio-political landscape and entrenched corruption, the force has faced increasing pressure to show that it is serious about reforming its operations and its personnel.

Karyoto’s message is clear: the fight against corruption and unethical behavior within law enforcement is ongoing. By addressing misconduct head-on, the Indonesian National Police aims to not only enhance its internal standards but also improve the relationship between the police and the people they are entrusted to serve.

As this situation continues to unfold, it is evident that police reform will be a central issue for Indonesian authorities in the years to come. With public trust in law enforcement institutions being tested globally, Karyoto’s decisive actions represent a crucial step toward restoring integrity and accountability within the force.
