Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Meta is now venturing into robotics, with plans to design both hardware and software for humanoid robots, according to a Bloomberg report. Meta has reportedly formed team within Meta’s Reality Labs division that will focus on developing robots.
Meta is entering the competitive humanoid robotics space as advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) drive innovation in automation and robotics. However, Bloomberg notes that Meta’s ambitions go beyond creating its own robots.
The company aims to develop core artificial intelligence (AI), sensor technology, and software that can be sold by a range of company. Meta has reportedly engaged in discussions with robotics firms such as Unitree Robotics and Figure AI to explore potential collaborations.
“The core technologies we’ve already invested in and built across Reality Labs and AI are complementary to developing the advancements needed for robotics,” Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth states as reported by Bloomberg.
“We believe that expanding our portfolio to invest in this field will only add value to Meta AI and our mixed and augmented reality programs.”
Robotic Industry
The robotics industry has already attracted interest from major tech players, with Meta now joining on the venture. Tesla has showcased its own humanoid robots far earlier compared to other tech giant. While Apple has seen researching robotic assistants recently.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently reported that the company is exploring both humanoid and non-humanoid robots as part of its future smart home ecosystem. including a Pixar-style lamp that interacts with users through voice commands and gestures.
New Division
The company is establishing a new division within its Reality Labs unit to develop AI-powered humanoid robots. Leading the initiative is Marc Whitten, the former CEO of GM’s now-defunct robotaxi project Cruise. Whitten has also held executive roles at Microsoft, Sonos, Unity, and Amazon.

Andrew Bosworth stated that the new robotics division will focus on research and development of “consumer humanoid robots with a goal of maximizing Llama’s platform capabilities,” according to Reuters. Llama, Meta’s AI foundation model, powers a growing suite of generative AI products across the company’s social media platforms.
As Meta deepens its investment in AI, the move underscores Meta’s significant investment in Reality Labs, as the division is now responsible for developing cutting-edge technologies aimed at driving future growth in humanoid robots.
