Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has predicted Indonesia weather as rainfall of varying intensity across most regions of the country on Sunday, February 16, 2025. According to BMKG forecaster Apdillah, light rain is expected in major cities such as Medan, Padang, Pekanbaru, Jambi, Palembang, and Bandar Lampung.

Light Rain Expected in Major Cities

“Light rain is also likely in Serang, Jakarta, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Tanjung Selor, Samarinda, Banjarmasin, Manado, Gorontalo, Palu, Mamuju, Kendari, and Makassar,” Apdillah said, as quoted by Antara News.

In addition, light rainfall is anticipated in Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Jayawijaya, Jayapura, and Merauke.

Meanwhile, moderate rain is forecast for Bengkulu, Kupang, Ternate, and Nabire. The BMKG also warned of thunderstorms in several areas, including Pangkal Pinang, Palangka Raya, and Bandung.

“These weather forecasts provide a general overview for each region,” Apdillah noted, advising the public to monitor real-time updates via the Info BMKG app, the official BMKG website (www.bmkg.go.id), or the agency’s social media handle @info.bmkg.

Besides rainfall, thick cloud cover is expected in Banda Aceh, Tanjung Pinang, Pontianak, and Mataram. This cloudy weather may lead to reduced visibility and cooler temperatures in these areas.

Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Efforts

In response to these forecasts, Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has issued guidelines to mitigate potential risks associated with extreme weather. Key measures include:

  • Establishing emergency preparedness posts
  • Closely monitoring BMKG updates
  • Utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to assess high-risk areas

“GIS technology allows us to analyze and model spatial data, helping us better understand and respond to weather-related threats,” BNPB stated.

Local governments have been instructed to prepare necessary resources to manage flooding and landslides triggered by extreme weather. Disseminating weather-related information to the public through various communication channels remains a top priority.

Public Advisory and Safety Tips

As Indonesia braces for these weather conditions, the public is urged to stay informed and prepared for potential disruptions caused by heavy rain and thunderstorms. The BMKG recommends:

  • Avoiding outdoor activities during heavy rainfall
  • Staying away from rivers and low-lying areas prone to flooding
  • Following updates from official sources like BMKG and BNPB

By staying vigilant and informed, communities can better prepare for and respond to the challenges posed by extreme weather events.
