Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Pope Francis remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital as of Wednesday, February 19, 2025, after being diagnosed with severe bilateral pneumonia, a condition affecting both lungs. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted last Friday (February 14) following worsening respiratory complications.

Concerns over the world Catholics church leader’s health have grown, given his age and medical history. However, Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, assured that the pope is in “stable condition” and expressed gratitude for the prayers and support received from around the world.

Pope’s Condition and Diagnosis

According to Vatican officials, Pope Francis is suffering from asthmatic bronchitis, which has required corticosteroid and antibiotic therapy. “Laboratory tests, chest X-rays, and clinical evaluations continue to present a complex picture,” the Vatican said in a statement.

The Holy See News Agency reported that the pope’s bronchitis has developed into a polymicrobial infection, meaning it is caused by multiple pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, or fungi.

Further medical examinations confirmed a severe polymicrobial respiratory infection, indicating a combination of viruses, bacteria, and potentially other microorganisms affecting his lungs.

“A follow-up CT scan of the pope’s chest conducted on Monday (February 17) confirmed the presence of bilateral pneumonia, requiring additional medication,” Matteo added.

Bilateral pneumonia is considered more serious than regular pneumonia because both lungs are compromised, leaving little healthy lung tissue to compensate for the infection.

History of Respiratory Issues

Pope Francis has a long history of lung problems. According to Kompas, at age 21 he underwent surgery to remove part of his lung due to pleurisy, a condition that causes inflammation in the lung’s lining. This has left him more vulnerable to respiratory infections.

Throughout his 12-year papacy, Pope Francis has faced multiple hospitalizations, including a three-night stay in March 2023 due to bronchitis.

Medical Care and Canceled Engagements

Since being admitted to Gemelli Hospital’s specialized ward, Pope Francis has canceled several scheduled appearances, according to a report by Politico on Monday (February 17). Sources close to the Vatican indicate that the pope had been experiencing intense pain for some time before his hospitalization.

Doctors have advised him against leading the traditional Angelus prayer and other official duties until further notice.

Accelerating Vatican Appointments

According to Kompas, Pope Francis moved to accelerate key appointments within the Vatican before his health deteriorated. On Thursday (February 6, 2025), he extended the tenure of Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re as Dean of the College of Cardinals, a role crucial in overseeing the preparation of a potential conclave to elect a new pope.

Additionally, he appointed Sister Raffaella Petrini as the first female governor of Vatican City, announcing that her term will begin on March 1, 2025, earlier than many had expected. A senior church official stated that the unexpected timing has fueled speculation about the pope’s health.

While Vatican sources insist that Pope Francis’ condition is stabilizing, medical experts caution that his polymicrobial pneumonia remains a complex and serious illness. The pope continues to receive intensive care as the global Catholic community prays for his recovery.
