Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Waingapu, East Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia, early Monday at 02:21 AM local time.

According to BMKG, the quake’s epicenter was located 36 kilometers northeast of Waingapu at a depth of 10 kilometers, with coordinates recorded at 9.34°S latitude and 120.34°E longitude.

BMKG confirmed that the earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat. Residents in affected areas were urged to remain calm and avoid misinformation.

The tremor was felt with Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) III-IV in Waingapu and MMI III in Ruteng. Shaking was also reported in Labuan Bajo at MMI II-III and in Bajawa at MMI III.

An MMI III intensity means the tremor was noticeable indoors, similar to the passing of a truck. MMI IV indicates that shaking was felt by many people indoors and by some outdoors, potentially causing rattling windows, creaking walls, and minor damage to fragile objects.

As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or structural damage. Authorities have advised residents to stay alert for potential aftershocks. For further updates, the public is encouraged to monitor BMKG’s official channels or contact local authorities.

Increasing Seismic Activity

Geographically, Indonesia is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a tectonic belt characterized by frequent earthquake and volcanic activity. In early 2025, BMKG has reported an increase of seismic activity in eastern part of Indonesia.

Authorities continue to monitor earthquake patterns closely, urging residents to remain vigilant and rely on official sources for accurate information.
