Causes of the Flooding

Heavy rainfall across Jakarta and surrounding areas on Sunday triggered the flooding. Additionally, floodwaters from upstream areas in Bogor contributed to the rising water levels in Jakarta.

Bogor Mayor Dedie A. Rachim urged Jakarta residents living along the banks of the Ciliwung River to remain vigilant, as water levels at the Katulampa Dam in Bogor reached 220 centimeters (Alert Level 1) on Sunday night (March 2).

On Sunday night, authorities declared Katulampa Dam at Alert Level 1 after heavy rainfall in the Puncak area of Bogor Regency, West Java. The intense downpour on Sunday evening caused a surge in the Ciliwung River’s water level at Katulampa Dam in Bogor City.

“I advise residents along the Ciliwung River, especially in Jakarta, to be alert. The floodwaters from upstream areas are expected to reach Jakarta by 6:30 AM local time,” Dedie said in a statement on Sunday, March 2, as reported by Antara.

At 9:33 PM local time, the water level at Katulampa Dam peaked at 220 centimeters, with a discharge rate of 514,659 liters per second, making it into Alert level 1. However, a few minutes later, the water level receded to 160 centimeters (Alert Level 2) by 10:15 PM, with a discharge rate of 307,467 liters per second.

“We are closely monitoring the water flow at Katulampa Dam. Hopefully, rainfall in upstream areas will decrease, reducing the risk of further flooding in both Bogor and Jakarta,” Dedie added.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge residents in flood-prone areas to remain cautious as Jakarta braces for potential further rainfall in the coming days.
