Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Dr. Marwan Al Sultan, Director of the Indonesia Hospital in Gaza, was killed in an Israeli airstrike that hit his home on Wednesday, July 2. The attack also claimed the lives of his wife and one of his daughters, drawing widespread condemnation from humanitarian and medical organizations.
According to reports, the missile, fired by an Israeli strike on residential building struck his residence in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood of Gaza City. The Israeli military claimed the strike targeted a “key Hamas operative,” but has yet to provide evidence.
The lack of verification has prompted criticism, especially given the loss of civilian and medical personnel. Gaza’s Health Ministry called Al Sultan’s death a war crime against medical workers. “He stood as a symbol of resilience during one of our darkest times,” the ministry said.
Dr. Marwan Al Sultan, a respected interventional cardiologist, led the Indonesia Hospital in Gaza through Israel’s ongoing military campaign and had worked closely with international medical teams from the UK, France, Canada, Spain, and other countries. He was widely admired for his unwavering commitment to patient care under dire conditions.

The Indonesian humanitarian group MER-C described him as a resilient and compassionate leader who prioritized medical services for Palestinians despite constant threats and limited resources. “Even in informal discussions, he always put patients first,” the group stated.
Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry also expressed condolences, emphasizing the late doctor’s significant contribution despite not being an Indonesian national. “We mourn the passing of Dr. Marwan Al Sultan,” said Judha Nugraha, Director of Citizen Protection at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.
Since Israel’s offensive in Gaza began in October 2023, the Indonesia Hospital has been struck multiple times. Israel has accused the facility of being used by Hamas, though no conclusive evidence has been presented. The hospital has since been declared non-operational by Gaza’s health authorities and the United Nations.
