Jakarta – The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the burning of the Quran by a Swedish citizen in front of the Södermalm Mosque, Stockholm, yesterday. The burning coincided with Eid al-Adha Day, Wednesday (28/6/2023).
This was conveyed by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as quoted from the official Twitter account @Kemlu_ RI, Thursday (6/29/2023).
“This action is very hurtful to the feelings of Muslims and cannot be justified,” the ministry said.
According to the ministry, freedom of expression must also respect the values and beliefs of other religions.
“Indonesia together with OIC member countries in Sweden have protested against this incident,” the ministry wrote.
As reported, a demonstration took place in front of the Södermalm Grand Mosque, Stockholm, Sweden during the Eid al-Adha celebration, on Thursday (28/6/2023). One of the two protesters even tore and burned the Quran as a form of opposition to Islam.
The act of burning and tearing the Quran was carried out by Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old Iraqi who fled to Sweden several years ago.
The act was witnessed by 200 people at the location. The Quran was torn up, used to wipe the man’s shoes and then burned. Another person shouted through a megaphone.
