Jakarta, IndonesiaSentinel.com — The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for the potential of heavy rainfall across several regions in Indonesia due to a combination of atmospheric phenomena. This weather alert is expected to last until September 2, 2024.

BMKG reports that while southern regions of Indonesia is impacted by atmospheric phenomena including Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara, are still experiencing dry season conditions with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies, there is an increased potential for rainfall in the coming week.

This is particularly true for central and northern parts of the country, encompassing northern to central Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, and Papua.

“This increased rainfall potential is influenced by global weather phenomena, including the active presence of the Kelvin Wave, the Equatorial Rossby Wave, and the Madden-Julian Oscillation. Additionally, areas of wind convergence and atmospheric instability are creating conditions conducive to rain cloud formation,” BMKG stated in an official release on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

BMKG’s analysis and monitoring indicate that rainfall levels in northern Indonesia have remained high from early to mid-August 2024. Notably, extremely heavy rain (100-150 mm/day) was recorded on August 18, 2024, at Maimun Aceh Meteorological Station (106 mm/day), on August 19 at Minangkabau Meteorological Station (148 mm/day), and on August 22, 2024, at Pattimura Meteorological Station (154 mm/day).
