Bandung, IndonesiaSentinel.com — Indonesia is planning to export electricity to Singapore with a capacity estimated at around 2-3 gigawatts (GW). Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves), Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, announced that Indonesia plans to export electricity from New and Renewable Energy (EBT) sources to Singapore.

According to Luhut, the policy of exporting electricity to Singapore aligns with Indonesia’s enormous potential of EBT, especially from energy sources such as solar power.

“We are negotiating to export green energy with Singapore. We will export about 2 gigawatts (GW) or possibly up to 3 gigawatts, seeing the potential here is very large,” said Luhut at the ISF 2024 event, Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), on September 5.

In addition, Luhut explained the government is also planning to develop the solar panel industry domestically. This is a strategic move aimed to strengthen Indonesia’s negotiating position for clean electricity exports to Singapore.

“We will establish our own solar panel industry. I believe this is part of our discussion with Singapore, and we are willing to do it,” he said.

At the same time, Indonesia also owns the largest green industrial area in North Kalimantan, which is expected to utilize a large-scale hydropower plant (PLTA) with a capacity of 9 GW.

“And this is also a game-changer for Indonesia. So our commitment to zero emissions is clear, there is no doubt,” he said.

Earlier, the Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Rachmat Kaimuddin, said that there would be several agreements related to new and renewable energy (EBT) that would be announced during the ISF 2024. One of them is related to Indonesia’s plan to export new and renewable energy electricity.

“Today, we have accommodated 10 agreements, and of course there are some that we think will be big, namely one plan to provide a conditional license for electricity exports to Singapore,” said Rachmat at the ISF 2024 preparations press conference, August 29, 2024.

Rachmat has not been able to reveal the exact value of this low-carbon electricity trade with Singapore. But what is certain is that the value could reach billions of dollars.

“The details will be confirmed later, but there is also cooperation with Carbon Capture and Storage, involving Pertamina. This could be quite significant,” said Rachmat.

In addition, Rachmat said that in essence, the 2024 ISF will discuss several important topics around mineral downstreaming, electric cars, green electricity development, and so on.
