Bandung, IndonesiaSentinel.com — The Bluesky social media platform was flooded with new users after the Brazilian government banned X, Elon Musk’s social media, in the country recently. Bluesky revealed that the number of their users had increased by 2.6 million in the last few days. This number is quite rapid, considering they only have 8.8 million users. In a statement on its official page, the company said that more than 85 percent of the new users were Brazilians, which means more than 2 million.

“In the last few days, Bluesky has grown to more than 2.6 million users, with more than 85 percent of whom are Brazilians. Welcome, we are very happy to have you here!” the company wrote on Thursday, September 5.

Stating from Engadget, users all over Brazil chose to migrate to Bluesky after X was no longer accessible in the country. Thus, The Bluesky social media platform experienced a huge spike in the number of broadcasts with a number of likes and unique posts every day, as well as an increase in the number of unique followers in the last few days.

While its platform isn’t powerful enough compared to X, Bluesky recently hinted that its next app update could help retain its new users.

Statistics show the impact of Brazilian netizens migration from X to Bluesky. For comparison, in the 96-hour period from August 30 to September 2, compared to the same period a month earlier, the number of likes on the platform increased from 13 million to 104.6 million, the number of followers increased from 1.4 million to 100.8 million, and the number of reposts increased from 1.3 million to 11 million.

Paul Frazee, the developer of Bluesky, warned that users may experience performance issues and lags because the platform “has never seen this much traffic.”

Bluesky is the work of Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter. The social media platform first launched in October 2022, shortly after Elon Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter.

Previously, access to X was banned in Brazil after the Supreme Court ordered a nationwide suspension and ordered Google and Apple to remove it from their app stores. Therefore, with X access being banned, netizens in Brazil are looking for some other platforms, one of which is Bluesky.
