Indonesia’s Carbon Capture and Storage Sector Could Reap Billions of Dollars Investment in the next Decades

Bandung, IndonesiaSentinel.com — Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves), Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that Indonesia has the potential to reap investment of up to tens of billions of US dollars (USD) from the planned cooperation in the Carbon Capture and Storage Sector (CCS).

Luhut said that the government is currently discussing a preliminary agreement plan on the CCS project with several potential investors.

“The preliminary regarding Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has been discussed, which could be very large sums, possibly tens of billions of dollars,” Luhut explained when meeting after the Indonesia International Sustainable Forum 2024 event at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Friday, September 6, 2024.

However, Luhut said that the potential investment of up to billions of US dollars could be achieved in the next decades. “Indeed, the investment would come in the next 20–25 years,” he added.

Previously, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) revealed that Indonesia has the potential to store carbon emissions of up to 570 giga tons.

The Director of Engineering and Environment of the Directorate General of Oil and Gas (Ditjen Migas) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Noor Arifin Muhamad, once revealed that there are at least 20 potential carbon storage resources in salt aquifers and depleted oil and gas reservoirs.

“The result of our Lemigas study shows that Indonesia has a potential of 570 giga tons (CO2),” he said at the Indonesian Petroleum Association Convention & Exhibition (IPA Convex), at ICE BSD Tangerang Selatan, Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

In detail, 577.62 giga tons of CO2 can be stored across 20 locations with two sources, namely from depleted oil and gas reservoirs and salt aquifers. This shows Indonesia’s potential in the Carbon Capture and Storage Sector (CCS).

The following is a list of potential domestic CO2 storage based on records from the Directorate General of Oil and Gas, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources :

  1. North East Java: 100.83 Giga Ton
  2. Tarakan: 91,92 Giga Ton
  3. North Sumatera: 53,34 Giga Ton
  4. Makassar Strait: 50,70 Giga Ton
  5. Central Sumatera: 43,54 Giga Ton
  6. Kutai: 43,00 Giga Ton
  7. Banggai: 40,31 Giga Ton
  8. South Sumatera: 39,69 Giga Ton
  9. Kendeng: 30,64 Giga Ton
  10. West Natuna: 13,15 Giga Ton
  11. Barito: 12,05 Giga Ton
  12. Seram: 11,58 Giga Ton
  13. Pasir: 10,36 Giga Ton
  14. Salawati: 8,75 Giga Ton
  15. West Java: 7,22 Giga Ton
  16. Sunda Asri: 6,52 Giga Ton
  17. Sengkang: 4,31 Giga Ton
  18. Bintuni: 2,13 Giga Ton
  19. North Serayu: 1,55 Giga Ton
  20. Bawean: 1,16 Giga Ton.
