Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — After nearly three decades of dominating Forbes annual list of the 400 wealthiest man, billionaire Bill Gates has seen his ranking plummet, falling out of the top 10 for the first time since 1991. Gates, who was still in sixth place earlier this year in January, now sits at 13th. This marks a significant shift in his wealth status, one of the most notable drops in his long tenure among the world’s richest.

As of Monday, October 7, 2024, Gates’ net worth, which stood at $120 billion in April, has dropped to $106.1 billion, placing him on the 13th ranks according to Forbes Real-Time Billionaires data. His current wealth equals approximately Rp 1.665 trillion.

A key factor contributing to Gates’ declining fortune is his high-profile 2021 divorce from Melinda French Gates, after 27 years of marriage. Following the split, Melinda resigned as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and launched her own philanthropic organization. She also announced plans to receive an additional $12.5 billion to fund her charitable endeavors.

While Melinda did not disclose the source of these funds or when they would be made available, Forbes reported that the money is not being drawn from the Gates Foundation’s assets but rather from Gates’ personal fortune. Furthermore, earlier estimates regarding the divorce settlement have been revised. Melinda’s net worth has nearly tripled, now standing at approximately $29 billion, up from $10.3 billion just a year ago. This growth makes her the ninth-richest woman in the United States.

Gates’ current ranking places him far behind several other tech moguls. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter), continues to hold the top spot on Forbes’ list, with a staggering net worth of $264 billion (Rp 4,114 trillion). Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, meanwhile, has risen into the top three, with a fortune of $206 billion (Rp 3,233 trillion).

Here are the top 10 richest man in the world, according to Forbes as of Monday, October 7, 2024:

  1. Elon Musk: $264 billion (Rp 4,114 trillion)
  2. Larry Ellison: $208 billion (Rp 3,265 trillion)
  3. Mark Zuckerberg: $206 billion (Rp 3,223 trillion)
  4. Jeff Bezos: $204.4 billion (Rp 3,208 trillion)
  5. Bernard Arnault: $184.7 billion (Rp 2,899 trillion)
  6. Warren Buffett: $145.5 billion (Rp 2,284 trillion)
  7. Larry Page: $138.9 billion (Rp 2,180 trillion)
  8. Sergey Brin: $132.9 billion (Rp 2,087 trillion)
  9. Amancio Ortega: $127.9 billion (Rp 2,008 trillion)
  10. Steve Ballmer: $122.3 billion (Rp 1,920 trillion)

Bill Gates’ fall from the top of Forbes’ list highlights the shifting fortunes of the world’s wealthiest individuals, many of whom have amassed vast fortunes through the technology sector.
