Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel ––  Indonesia’s Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Prof. Abdul Mu’ti, announced plans for a nationwide teacher salary increase, targeting implementation in 2025. The raise is expected to benefit all teachers, including civil servants (ASN), government contract workers (PPPK), and honorary teachers.

“We hope to implement these salary raises by 2025, with an increase in teacher allowances,” Mu’ti stated at a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, October 28. The ministry is currently finalizing the number of eligible teachers, focusing on those certified across various categories, from civil service teachers to contract teachers. Mu’ti emphasized the importance of updating teacher data to ensure the accuracy of funding requests submitted to the Ministry of Finance.

The government has earmarked funds to support the upcoming raises, which will first impact elementary and junior high school teachers. “We hope that improved teacher welfare will drive greater enthusiasm for teaching. As quality educators are essential for quality education,” Mu’ti added, as reported by CNN Indonesia.

While the exact salary increase is still under calculation, Mu’ti confirmed it would vary according to teacher status. The proposed scheme set for 2025, the Indonesian government is aiming to increase salaries for certified teachers who hold civil servant (ASN) status. This includes both tenured public school teachers and those under government contracts (PPPK), as well as certified honorary teachers.

During the presidential campaign, President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming pledged a salary increase of Rp2 million (roughly $127) per teacher, alongside holiday bonuses (THR) for all teachers, including those on contracts.

“We need to ensure that only eligible teachers receive this support, preventing any improper allocation,” Mu’ti noted, as reported by Detikcom on Monday.

In addition to pay increases, Mu’ti said the government is committed to enhancing teacher quality. Efforts include strengthening the nation’s guidance counseling by upgrading the skills of both guidance counselors and subject teachers, equipping them to provide essential support to students.
