Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — A branch manager of a regional post office of PT Pos Indonesia in Sedanau, Natuna Regency, Riau Islands, identified by initial “F,” has been arrested on charges of embezzling direct cash assistance (BLT) funds intended for social aid, allegedly diverting approximately Rp448 million ($28,500) for online gambling.

Natuna Police Public Relations Officer Aipda David Arviad explained the case surfaced after Indonesia’s Ministry of Social Affairs disbursed social aid funds to PT Pos Indonesia Tanjungpinang office in 2023. The funds were subsequently transferred to a sub-branch in Sedanau.

However, out of the total Rp911.4 million allocated, the suspect allegedly withdrew Rp448.3 million for personal use, including betting on online gambling platforms.

“The funds, amounting to Rp448.3 million, were supposed to be distributed to 409 beneficiary families and recipients of the Nusantara Economic Heroes (Pena) program,” stated David in a press release on Monday, November 11.

During the arrest, authorities seized several pieces of evidence, including Rp30 million in cash, two mobile phones, and various documents.

According to David, the suspect has been charged under Article 2, paragraph 1, and/or Article 3, in conjunction with Article 18 of Law No. 31 of 1999 on the Eradication of Corruption, which was amended by Law No. 20 of 2021.

The penalties include a possible life sentence or a minimum of 4 years to a maximum of 20 years in prison, along with fines ranging from Rp200 million to Rp1 billion under Article 2.

Article 3 carries a sentence of up to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 1 year to a maximum of 20 years, and fines ranging between Rp20 million and Rp1 billion.

The authorities are continuing their investigation into the case to determine if any other individuals were involved in the misuse of these social aid funds. This case highlights the growing concern over the misuse of public funds for online gambling in Indonesia, underscoring the urgent need for stronger oversight and stricter measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
