Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data revealed Indonesia milk imports have seen a notable increase throughout 2024. From January to October 2024, Indonesia imported a total of 257.300 tons of milk, reflecting a 7.07% rise compared to the same period in the previous year.

“The volume of milk imports for the January-October 2024 period was 257.300 tons, up by 7.07% compared to the same period last year,” said Acting BPS Chief, Amalia Adininggar, during a press conference on Friday November 15.

Breaking down the data by month, BPS noted a significant increase in milk imports for October 2024. “If we look at the data, imports in October 2024 increased both on a monthly basis compared to September 2024 and on an annual basis compared to October 2023,” Amalia explained.

In October 2024, Indonesia imported 24.860 tons of milk, a 23.07% increase from the 20.200 tons recorded in September 2024. Year-over-year, milk imports for October also rose by 27.90%, up from 19.430 tons in October 2023.

Milk Cream and Powder Imports

Amalia clarified that Indonesia’s milk imports primarily consist of milk cream and powdered milk, rather than fresh milk.

“The majority of Indonesia’s milk imports are in the form of milk cream and powdered milk, not fresh milk. The proportion of fresh milk is very small,” she emphasized.

Key Sources of Milk Imports

Amalia explained that New Zealand, the United States, and Australia are the top suppliers of milk to Indonesia.

BPS data shows that from January to October 2024, New Zealand contributed 49.30% of Indonesia’s total milk imports, with a volume of 126.840 tons. This figure represents a 7.28% increase from the 118.230 tons imported during the same period last year.

The United States was the second-largest supplier, accounting for 45.180 tons or 17.56% of the total imports. However, this marks a decline of 20.33% from the previous year’s figure of 56.700 tons.

Australia ranked third, with Indonesia importing 38.190 tons from the country from January to October 2024, contributing 14.84% of the total. This marks a substantial increase of 98.55% compared to the 19.230 tons imported during the same period last year.

Annual Import Data

On an annual basis, Indonesia imported 287.970 tons of milk in 2023. In 2022 Indonesia record the highest import volume since the last five years with a total of 338.580 tons. In prior years, Indonesia imported 290.560 tons in 2021, 273.140 tons in 2020, and 262.200 tons in 2019.

The data that BPS revealed in milk imports shows Indonesia’s growing demand for dairy products, particularly in processed forms like milk cream and powdered milk.
