Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The decent standard of living in Indonesia has improved in 2024, with the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reporting that the average real expenditure per person reached Rp12.34 million (approximately $784) per year, or around Rp1.02 million ($65) per month.

The figure is based on the real per capita expenditure data within the Human Development Index (HDI) released by BPS on Friday, November 15, 2024.

According to BPS data, Indonesia’s Human Development Index (HDI) for 2024 rose to 75.02, reflecting an increase of 0.63 points or 0.85% compared to the previous year’s score of 74.39. Acting BPS Chief, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, highlighted that the adjusted real per capita expenditure for 2024 reached Rp12.34 million per year. This is an increase from 2023’s figure of Rp11.89 million per year (Rp990,800 per month).

“The achievement marks an increase of Rp442.000 or 3.71% compared to the previous year,” Amalia stated. “This growth rate also surpasses the average annual growth of 2.61% observed between 2020 and 2023.”

Regional Disparities in Living Costs

The data reveals significant regional disparities in real per capita spending. Jakarta recorded the highest real per capita expenditure at Rp19.95 million ($1,268) annually, or approximately Rp1.66 million ($106) per month.

Meanwhile, Papua Pegunungan Province ranked the lowest, with real per capita expenditure of only IDR 5.7 million ($362) per year, or around Rp 475,000 ($30) per month.

The rise in living standards, as reflected in the HDI increase, showcases progress, yet also emphasizes the need for targeted efforts to bridge the gap between different provinces.
