Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — A 24-year-old Indonesian national (WNI), initial YAP, has been arrested in Kakegawa City, Japan, on charges of robbery and stabbing an elderly couple in their home. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) confirmed the incident, revealing that the stolen money was allegedly used to fund YAP’s online gambling activities.

“YAP carried out the robbery to finance his online gambling,” said Judha Nugraha, Director General of the Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement as reported by Detik.com on Saturday, November 30, 2024.

The victims, aged 81 and 78, suffered severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

YAP was apprehended on November 27, 2024, according to the Kakegawa Police, which informed the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo the following day. Authorities are charging him with attempted robbery and attempted murder.

“YAP was arrested for the attempted robbery and murder of two elderly Japanese citizens,” said Judha. “His actions resulted in serious injuries to the couple, who are now hospitalized.”

Judha also noted that Yogi, who had been living in Japan for two years, was a trainee at a raw materials company in Chihama.

Incident Details

According to Japanese media NHK, the crime occurred on Monday, November 18, 2024. YAP, acting alone, entered the home of the elderly couple in Kakegawa City, located just two kilometers from his residence.

Carrying a kitchen knife, YAP reportedly rang the doorbell before entering through the front door. At approximately 5:15 p.m. local time, he first attacked the wife, inflicting severe injuries, before turning on the husband, who sustained less severe wounds.

During police questioning, Yogi admitted to injuring the couple but denied any intent to kill them. The knife used in the attack was recovered at the scene and secured as evidence.

Consular Assistance

The Kakegawa Police are continuing their investigation, and the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has pledged consular support to ensure that Yogi’s legal rights are upheld under Japanese law.

“The Kakegawa Police are conducting an investigation into this case. The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo will provide consular assistance to guarantee the individual’s rights are respected within the framework of local laws,” said Judha.

This shocking incident highlights concerns over crimes involving foreign nationals in Japan and underscores the importance of legal protections and accountability for all parties involved.
