Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — A new AI-powered mobile app called Death Clock is causing a stir online with its ability to predict users’ life expectancy based on their lifestyle habits. Its unique approach to merging artificial intelligence (AI) with personal health insights has intrigued users eager to see predictions about their potential date of death.

Death Clock markets itself as “AI-powered longevity” app, it provides users with personalized recommendations to improve their life expectancy, including healthier habits to delay the predicted death. Since its launch in July, the app has garnered significant attention, with over 125,000 downloads.

Available exclusively in the United States on the App Store and Google Play Store, the app promises to use “advanced AI technology” to help people understand how their habits can influence their life expectancy and guide towards healthier living.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Death Clock trains its AI using a dataset of over 1,200 life expectancy studies and data from 53 million participants to deliver personalized predictions to its users. Factors such as diet, exercise, stress levels, and sleep patterns are assessed to generate individualized predictions.

To claim its full capability of the prediction, the app require for an annual subscription fee of $40. Thus, users can access habit-improving suggestions alongside a live countdown clock to their estimated death.

Origins and Use Cases

Developer Brent Franson, who designed Death Clock, told Bloomberg that the app initially gained popularity among health enthusiasts and bodybuilders seeking a tool to guide their wellness journeys. Franson claims that the AI’s predictions are significantly more accurate than traditional life expectancy models, such as life tables, by providing a tailored analysis for users.

Therefore, with its ability to predict life expectancy, Death Clock has the potential to become a valuable tool for both individuals and also the government. The app can assist in economic calculations, including retirement income needs, life insurance coverage, pension funding policies, and financial planning.

Knowing one’s life expectancy allows individuals to make more precise plans for savings and future investments, according to the report.

Despite its popularity, the app has raised questions regarding its reliability. The developers have not disclosed specific details about the AI model or its architecture, sparking skepticism about the accuracy of its predictions. Nonetheless, Death Clock has been praised for encouraging users to reflect on lifestyle changes that could lower their health risks.

Whether it’s a motivational tool for healthier living or a morbid curiosity, Death Clock taps into a universal desire to better understand—and perhaps extend—our time on Earth.
