Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — South Sumatra Police are investigating the assault of a medical intern from Sriwijaya University (Unsri) at a Palembang café, an incident that has sparked national attention and gone viral on social media. The attack reportedly stemmed from a dispute over New Year’s duty assignments.

Director of Criminal Investigation at the South Sumatra Police, Commissioner Muhammad Anwar Reksowidjojo, stated the suspect, identified as FD, acted out of anger, believing the victim had been disrespectful toward his employer. FD’s employer, Lina Dedy, is the mother of the victim’s friend and was allegedly involved in pressuring the victim to swap his New Year’s shift.

“The suspect, FD, was frustrated after observing what he perceived as the victim ignoring the requests of his employer, Lina Dedy. Acting spontaneously, FD physically attacked the victim,” Anwar said during a press conference on Saturday, December 14, 2024.

Footage of the assault, showing FD repeatedly striking the medical intern, Lutfi, in his uniform, quickly circulated online. Bystanders attempted to intervene during the attack, which left Lutfi with visible bruises on his face.

The victim was immediately taken to Bhayangkara Hospital for treatment and later filed a police report. The incident, which occurred on December 10, 2024, shocked the public, given its violent nature and its connection to a university environment.

Following the assault, FD surrendered himself to the South Sumatra Police and admitted to the crime. The suspect has been charged under Article 351, Paragraph 2 of the Indonesian Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Dispute Over Shift Assignment

The conflict began when Lutfi’s friend, identified as Lady, was scheduled for duty on New Year’s Eve. Her mother, Lina Dedy, reportedly pressured Lutfi to take her daughter’s place. When Lutfi resisted the request, the situation escalated, ultimately leading to the assault.

Police have confirmed that Lina Dedy was not directly involved in ordering the attack. The investigation continues as authorities examine the role of all parties involved.

Unsri Reaction and Family Statement

The incident has drawn a strong reaction from Sriwijaya University. Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Syarif Husin, expressed his concern over the attack, stating, “We are deeply saddened and strongly condemn any form of violence, especially against our students. The safety and well-being of our academic community are of utmost importance.”

Dr. Syarif announced that the university has formed an internal investigative team to gather facts and determine appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents.

On the victim’s side, Lutfi’s older brother, Audy, shared his disappointment over the ordeal. “My brother came all the way from Jakarta to Palembang to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. We didn’t expect such a shocking event to happen. Our family is committed to supporting him through this difficult time.”

Police Investigation Ongoing

South Sumatra Police are committed to resolving the case swiftly and fairly. Police spokesperson Commissioner Sunarto acknowledged the viral nature of the case and assured the public that it would be handled professionally.

The incident has prompted broader discussions about workplace ethics and the treatment of medical interns in Indonesia. It also highlights the need for stronger policies ensuring the safety of students and workers in all environments.

As the investigation unfolds, both the campus community and law enforcement have pledged to work together to ensure justice and restore a sense of security for the victim and other students.
