Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia weather alert, tourist boats in Labuan Bajo urged to exercise caution as high waves are expected of up to 2.5 meters. The warning was issued by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

BMKG citing strong winds in the waters within Komodo National Park, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) as the primary cause of the wave activity. The high waves were expected to last until 24 Desember.

“High waves ranging from 2.0 to 2.5 meters are driven by prolonged strong winds over the sea surface. These conditions are expected to persist from December 21 to December 24, 2024,” said Maria Patricia Christin Seran, Head of the Komodo Meteorological Station, on Saturday, December 21, 2024.

Maria explained that the high waves in Labuan Bajo, within Komodo National Park’s waters are influenced by low-pressure systems over the Indian Ocean, south of Banten, interacting with another low-pressure system over Australia.

“The combination of these low-pressure systems triggers strong southwest-to-west winds, significantly affecting sea conditions in Indonesian waters,” she stated. Added that strong winds were also a key factor contributing to the increased wave height, especially in southern Sape Strait.

Therefore, BMKG advised those engaging in maritime activities including tourism to consistently monitor weather updates. Fishermen have also been advised to avoid fishing activities in southern waters until conditions are deemed safe.

“Weather monitoring is crucial during the holiday period, as rainy season and active Asian monsoon already in effect,” Maria said. “This is essential to minimize the risk of maritime accidents and ensure the safety of everyone involved in marine activities.”

As Indonesia alert for disaster, authorities continue to monitor weather condition specifically in tourist destinations such as Labuan Bajo. Tourist urged to keep update on the weather conditions and remain vigilant ahead of Christmas and New Year Holidays period.
