Indonesia Receives Over 11,000 Financial Fraud Reports in 2024

Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia Anti-Scam Center (IASC) has received more than 11,000 public complaints regarding financial fraud as of December 20, 2024. The data was revealed during a press release from the Financial Services Authority (OJK) on Monday, December 23.

According to Tempo, the IASC reported handling 11,448 fraud complaints, resulting in the blocking of 5,987 bank accounts suspected of being linked to fraudulent activities. Through these efforts, the center successfully recovered approximately Rp27.1 billion ($1.7 million) in stolen funds.

The IASC was established as part of the Task Force for Eradicating Illegal Financial Activities (Satgas PASTI), which includes collaboration between 10 ministries, Bank Indonesia, the Attorney General’s Office, the National Police, the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK).

The IASC was acting as a bridge between the task force and financial industry players including banks, payment service providers, e-commerce platforms, and other related stakeholders. Therefore, IASC aims to facilitates swift and coordinated handling of fraud reports.

Financial Fraud Reports

The Indonesia Anti-Scam Center (IASC) aims to swiftly and effectively address financial fraud reports in the country, ensuring accurate follow-ups and deterrent measures in compliance with applicable regulations.

Victims of financial scams can report their cases to the IASC by submitting relevant data and supporting documents. Once received, banks and payment service providers will verify the reports.

If fraudulent activity is confirmed, actions such as transaction suspension and account blocking will follow.

The IASC then identifying individuals and networks involved in the financial fraud and coordinates with law enforcement agencies for further legal action.

Through rapid responses and cross-agency collaboration, the center aims to recover victims’ remaining funds while pursuing perpetrators with legal consequences.

Increasing Financial Fraud

OJK states that the establishment of this coordination forum through IASC was to addresses the rising prevalence of financial fraud in Indonesia and the increasing financial losses suffered by victims.

The OJK highlighted that financial scams are becoming increasingly diverse, with some overlapping into illegal online gambling (judol) schemes. Thus, OJK advised public to report any financial fraud immediately through IASC.

“If you encounter financial fraud, report it immediately to the IASC at iasc.ojk.go.id or contact OJK through their hotline number at 157 (@kontak157),” the OJK stated.

With the IASC’s presence, the authority hopes to enhance the tracking of fraudsters and illegal gambling operators using bank accounts, enabling quicker investigations and enforcement measures.
