Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia’s Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has issued of indonesia weather alert for heavy rainfall across several regions of the country between January 10 and 16, 2025. The warning is prompted by stronger-than-usual Asian monsoon winds and the development of Tropical Cyclone Seed 97S, which is expected to influence weather conditions over the coming days.

BMKG officials explained that the intensified monsoon winds have triggered conditions conducive to heavy rains, especially in the western regions of Indonesia. Additionally, the presence of the tropical cyclone off the southern coast of Lampung is expected to bring increased rainfall and strong winds to several areas.

Impact of Tropical Cyclone and Rainfall

The BMKG forecast suggests that regions such as Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, and Central Java will experience significant rainfall, with some areas seeing very heavy downpours. The tropical cyclone, located in the Indian Ocean to the south of Lampung, is also causing high waves in southern Indonesian waters. This severe weather is anticipated to last for several days, heightening the risk of flooding, landslides, and other weather-related hazards.

BMKG has further pointed out that the combination of the Asian monsoon’s intensity and the tropical cyclone’s influence could lead to dangerous conditions across many parts of Indonesia. The agency is urging residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for potential disruptions caused by the extreme weather.

For areas like North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau Islands, South Sumatra, Jambi, and Bengkulu, BMKG warns of very heavy rainfall that could exacerbate the risk of flooding and landslides.

The Science Behind the Forecast of

The severe weather conditions forecasted for the coming week are attributed to a combination of natural atmospheric phenomena. The Asian monsoon has been stronger than normal in recent days, while the tropical cyclone, which is expected to strengthen, is significantly influencing weather patterns.

Furthermore, the La Niña phenomenon, which is expected to persist until March 2025, is contributing to the unusually heavy rainfall. This climate event often leads to cooler-than-average sea temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, triggering heavy rainfall in Southeast Asia. The Rossby waves and Kelvin waves in the atmosphere are also playing a role in intensifying the convective clouds, which cause heavy precipitation.

Public Safety and Preparedness

BMKG’s warning highlights the potential for hydrometeorological disasters, including floods, landslides, and falling trees. In response, the agency has called on the public to stay informed and be ready for the possibility of severe indonesia weather in their areas.

For those living in affected regions, BMKG recommends taking precautions such as reinforcing roofs, clearing drains, and trimming overgrown tree branches. It also urges individuals to avoid traveling in areas prone to flooding and to have emergency supplies readily available, such as food, water, and batteries.

The BMKG’s proactive stance in issuing the warning serves as a critical step in helping the public prepare for what could be a tumultuous week in Indonesia’s rainy season.
