Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Vietnam has surpassed Indonesia in durian exports, solidifying its position as a new global durian powerhouse. In 2024, Vietnam’s durian export value reached $3.3 billion, equivalent to approximately Rp53.6 trillion.
For years, Thailand and Indonesia dominated Southeast Asia’s durian production. However, Vietnam’s rapid ascent has surpasses both country.
According to a report by The Straits Times, Vietnam’s durian exports in 2024 surged 7.8 times compared to 2022, now accounting for nearly 50% of the nation’s total fruit and vegetable export value.
China’s Demand of Durian
This growth is largely driven by China’s soaring demand for durians, which are considered a luxury fruit and a creative culinary ingredient in the country. Among China’s growing middle class, durian has become a trendy indulgence, inspiring innovative dishes like durian hot pots, stuffed buns, and durian-themed buffets, further boosting consumption.
In addition, reports from Medium highlight that Chinese consumers view durian as a source of energy and vitality, often choosing it for its perceived health benefits. The fruit is also linked to the traditional Chinese concept of “qi,” or life force, believed to be enhanced by certain foods.
Vietnam capitalized on this opportunity by ensuring year-round production of high-quality durians to meet the demands of China’s premium market.
Strategic Trade Agreements
Vietnam solidified its position through strategic trade agreements with China, including a 2022 export protocol that guarantees strict quality standards. These include food safety compliance, product traceability, and advanced freezing technology to preserve freshness.
In November 2024, China imported 1.53 million tons of durian, valued at $6.83 billion, marking a 9.4% year-on-year increase. Vietnam captured 47% of China’s durian market share, closely challenging Thailand’s dominant position.
Vietnam’s success is also attributed to the country’s comprehensive strategy that combines quality improvements, technological innovation, and international market expansion. The country has maximized durian cultivation across regions like the Mekong Delta and highland areas to maintain consistent production.
Therefore, Vietnam’s durian export milestone of $3.3 billion in 2024 has become a cornerstone of the country’s export. Overall, Vietnam’s exports grew by 14.3% in 2024, reaching $405.53 billion.
Indonesia’s Durian Exports
Meanwhile, Indonesia faces significant challenges in competing with Vietnam. According to Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the country’s durian exports totaled a mere $1.07 million (around 17.3 billion rupiah) in 2023, a stark contrast to Vietnam’s achievements.

As Vietnam continues to dominate the durian market, Indonesia must innovate and adapt to reclaim its place among the top durian-exporting nations.
