Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — In Singapore, vending machines are not just for soda and snacks anymore, it can offers fresh durian. Starting January 20, a new vending machine offering durians will debut at the Tampines MRT station, providing residents with an innovative way to enjoy the “King of Fruits.”
Durian distributor Kaki Kaki has announced plans to install a durian vending machine at Tampines MRT station. The machine will offer 400-gram boxes of Musang King durians priced at SGD38 (approximately USD28), with a promotional 50% discount running until mid-February, according to The Straits Times.
Streamlined Operations and Quality Assurance
Kaki Kaki co-founder C.Y. Wong highlighted the purposes of the vending machine model. “The vending machines allow us to streamline operations while ensuring every durian is handled with care, precision, and consistency,” Wong said, as reported by The Nations.
The vending machines feature Musang King durians, a premium variety sourced directly from Malaysian farmers. By eliminating middlemen, the company reduces costs and maintains competitive pricing. Bulk purchases and streamlined operations further help keep prices affordable
To guarantee quality, all durians are transported using a cold-chain system from farm to table. The vending machines are also restocked daily to maintain freshness, and any unsold fruit is repurposed. Leftover durians are turned into puree, which is then supplied to shops and bakeries, ensuring minimal waste.
Expanding Accessibility
The company, which has been in the durian retail business for over a decade, says the initiative aims to make high-quality, hand-picked durians more accessible to consumers.
The Tampines MRT station vending machine is the fourth of its kind operated by Kaki Kaki in Singapore. Other locations include Parc Oasis in Jurong East, Casa Merah in Tanah Merah, and Skypark Residences in Sembawang, all of which were launched in December 2024.

The company is planning further expansion. “We are exploring opportunities to collaborate with partners, including malls and retail spaces, to make our vending machines even more accessible,” a Kaki Kaki spokesperson said, as reported by CNA Lifestyle.
This novel approach not only caters to Singapore’s durian enthusiasts but also showcases how technology and innovation can reshape traditional retail models, offering consumers greater convenience and sustainability.
