Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Chinese e-commerce platform has seen a surge in sales of a unique product, a ‘bra’ to cover Men’s Adam’s apple. The comes after a female influencer called on men to cover their Adam’s apple to highlight gender inequality and promote women’s rights.
According to a recent report from the South China Morning Post, Adam’s apple cover went viral after a social media campaign led by Chinese influencer Zhu Miaolin, known as Ah Miao on Chinese platforms.
Zhu urged her male friends to wear these ‘bra’ designed to cover the Adam’s apple, arguing that men should protect this “sensitive area” just as women wear bras for their breasts.
Promoted as a gesture to empower women and draw attention to gender disparities in China, Ah Miao’s campaign quickly gained traction, spurred Adam’s apple cover production and sales.
On a major Chinese e-commerce platform, Adam’s apple covers are sold for between 5 and 20 yuan (roughly 70 cents to $3), available in materials such as wool, leather, and lace. Among the most popular designs is one inspired by a pig’s snout, which has reportedly sold over 7,000 units on a single platform.
Adam’s Apple Cover and Gender Inequality
Zhu’s initiative which aimed at empower women has resonated with many online users, sparking both praise and criticism. She described the Adam’s apple cover as a symbolic piece of clothing, similar to a bra, arguing that the male Adam’s apple can also be considered a a delicate, sensitive area.
One online commenter even suggested that both breasts and the Adam’s apple can have “sexual appeal” in certain contexts. “If women wear bras to protect their bodies, why shouldn’t men? The Adam’s apple cover is for them,” one user wrote.
The movement comes amid ongoing discussions about gender inequality in China, particularly following the country’s 2020 National Census, which revealed a gender imbalance of 34.9 million more men than women—a lingering effect of the one-child policy.
In March 2024, high-level government proposals further underscored the persistent challenges faced by women in the workplace and at home, with gender disparities becoming a growing factor in why many young women are choosing not to start families.
