Bali, Indonesia Sentinel — The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that Tropical Cyclone 96S is causing extreme weather, particularly strong winds across Bali. According to Antara on Monday (February 10, 2025), the agency recorded wind speeds in Bali reaching up to 74 km/h (40 knots).

BMKG Region III Denpasar noted that the impact of Tropical Cyclone 96S has caused on a significant increase on wind speeds, leading to strong winds battering across the Bali region over the past few days.

“Ngurah Rai Meteorological Station recorded a maximum wind speed of 40 knots at 06:39 WITA,” said Wayan Musteana, Head of the Meteorology Operational Working Group at BMKG Region III in Denpasar, as reported by Detik.

Tropical Cyclone 96S formed south of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), in the Indian Ocean west of Western Australia. BMKG Denpasar predicts that these conditions will persist for at least three more days, until February 12, 2025.

Early Warning

BMKG Region III Denpasar had previously issued an early warning advising residents to be cautious of strong winds and moderate to heavy rainfall expected from February 9-12, 2025. The public is also urged to remain alert for lightning, flooding, landslides, and falling trees.

The tropical cyclone has also contributed to rising sea waves, with wave heights in the waters south of Bali and NTT estimated to reach up to 3.5 meters.

BMKG warns that current wind and wave conditions pose risks to maritime safety. Maritime tourism operators, tourists, and fishermen are advised to be cautious.

Fishermen using small boats should be wary of wind speeds exceeding 15 knots and waves over 1.25 meters. Tugboat operators are advised to exercise caution if wind speeds exceed 16 knots and waves rise above 1.5 meters. Ferry operators should be alert to wind speeds exceeding 21 knots and waves reaching over 2.5 meters.

Extreme weather, including heavy rain and strong winds, battered Bali on Sunday (February 9), toppling dozens of trees, damaging homes, causing power outages, and resulting in casualties.

According to CNN Indonesia, three people were killed when a large tree collapsed onto a cockfighting arena in Bungaya Village, Bebandem District, Karangasem Regency, on Sunday (February 9).
