This move highlights Apple’s desire to decrease its reliance on external suppliers, particularly Qualcomm, with whom it has had a tumultuous history, including a patent dispute settled in 2019.
Despite using Qualcomm’s 5G modems in current devices, the iPhone SE 4 will reportedly be the first device to feature Apple’s internal modem technology, providing an opportunity for testing before wider deployment across more products.
