Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Batak ethnic group has emerged as Indonesia’s leading producer of college graduates in 2024, according to a report released by Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS). The data highlights how higher education is distributed across various ethnic groups in the country, revealing the Batak people’s dominance in this sphere.

BPS data shows that 18.02% of Batak individuals in Indonesia attained a bachelor’s degree in 2024, narrowly edging out the Minangkabau ethnic group, which recorded 18%. The Bali and Bugis ethnic groups tied for third place, each with 14.54%, followed by the Betawi in fifth at 14.38%.

“Parents are willing to make significant sacrifices, Sometimes, families are willing to go into debt to support their children’s education. It’s all part of their commitment to preserving cultural and traditional values, which must align with intellectual advancement,” he concluded
