Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Batak ethnic group has emerged as Indonesia’s leading producer of college graduates in 2024, according to a report released by Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS). The data highlights how higher education is distributed across various ethnic groups in the country, revealing the Batak people’s dominance in this sphere.
BPS data shows that 18.02% of Batak individuals in Indonesia attained a bachelor’s degree in 2024, narrowly edging out the Minangkabau ethnic group, which recorded 18%. The Bali and Bugis ethnic groups tied for third place, each with 14.54%, followed by the Betawi in fifth at 14.38%.
Interestingly, the top four ethnic groups with the highest rates of college graduates are all from regions outside the island of Java, Indonesia’s most populous area. The Betawi, a group native to Java, secured the fifth position.
Cultural Roots of Academic Excellence
Social observer Togar Butar-Butar attributes the Batak people’s academic success to their cultural values, according to Mashable. He explained that Batak traditions strongly emphasize education as a tool for personal and community development.
“Batak society highly values education,” Togar said. He explained that the Batak ethnic group adheres to three core life philosophies: hamoraon (wealth), hagabeon (successful descendants), and hasangapon (honor). Education, believes as the key to achieving all three ideals.
Togar noted that the pursuit of higher education is ingrained in Batak families, who often view their children as their greatest treasure and assets which is why they are always striving to ensure the next generation attains higher education.
“Parents are willing to make significant sacrifices, Sometimes, families are willing to go into debt to support their children’s education. It’s all part of their commitment to preserving cultural and traditional values, which must align with intellectual advancement,” he concluded

The Batak people’s widespread migration across Indonesia has also played a role in their educational success. Similar to the Minangkabau, the Batak are known for their willingness to move to new regions, which has given them greater access to educational opportunities. Many Batak individuals settle permanently in their adopted areas, extending their cultural influence and increasing their educational achievements.
