Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — A Brazilian tourist, Juliana Marins (26), was confirmed dead after falling into a deep ravine on Mount Rinjani, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Saturday, June 21, 2025. The tragic incident drew national attention due to the extreme terrain and the complexity of the rescue operation.

Marins was reported to have fallen into the ravine early Saturday morning. Initial drone footage captured her showing signs of movement, but those signs diminished shortly after. Her fall was initially estimated at 200 meters, but rescuers later found her body at a depth of 600 meters.

Air Marshal Mohammad Syafii, Chief of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), confirmed in a statement Tuesday night that the victim was found deceased at the 600-meter mark.

The first distress call came in around 6:30 a.m. local time Saturday. A joint rescue team, comprising personnel from Mount Rinjani National Park, Basarnas Mataram, Sembalun Police, the Emergency Medical Hikers Community (EMHC), and East Lombok SAR was immediately dispatched with vertical rescue equipment.

By noon, rescuers had reached Post 4 on the trekking trail and began closing in on the presumed fall location. However, steep terrain and adverse weather delayed immediate recovery efforts.

The treacherous topography and poor weather conditions made rescue process extremely difficult. The operation continued with the help of helicopters, thermal drones, and two seasoned climbers.

Three days later, on Tuesday at 4:52 p.m., the SAR team reached a depth of 400 meters. At 6:00 p.m., a Basarnas rescuer named Hafid Hasadi reached Marins’ body at 600 meters depth. Sadly, she was declared dead at the scene.

By 6:31 p.m. Tuesday, additional rescue personnel reached the site to begin body-wrapping procedures. Seven rescuers camped overnight near the victim’s location using a “flying camp” system, three remained at the 400-meter anchor point, while four stayed with the body.

Due to worsening weather and limited visibility, the vertical evacuation was postponed to Wednesday. The plan includes lifting the body, transporting it via stretcher down the mountain to the Sembalun base post, and airlifting it by helicopter to Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Mataram for a formal medical handover.
