Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Choi Soon-hwa, an 80-year-old grandmother of three, has made headlines by becoming a finalist in the Miss Universe Korea competition.
Her participation is a testament to a significant shift in the contest of Miss Universe Korea rules, which previously limited candidates to those between the ages of 18 and 28.
Due to increasing pressure for inclusivity, Miss Universe has removed these restrictions, allowing people from various walks of life, including older women, pregnant women, and those who have children or have been married, to compete.
Choi’s decision to join the pageant was motivated by the opportunity to inspire others.
“Now that the age limit is gone, I thought, ‘I have to give this a try.’ Whether I succeed or not, I am determined to seize this opportunity,” Choi shared in an interview with Oddity Central.
She emphasizes that beauty goes beyond outward appearances, stating that inner peace and the ability to appreciate others are equally essential.
Although this is Choi’s first time entering a beauty pageant, she is no stranger to the spotlight. For years, she has worked as a senior fashion model, gracing the pages of prestigious magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, and featuring in commercial campaigns for various Korean brands.
Remarkably, her modeling career began at the age of 72 when a patient she cared for as a nurse suggested she try modeling.
“One of my patients recommended that I become a model,” Choi explained. “At first, I thought it was absurd… but at the same time, it rekindled my long-held dream of being a model, wearing beautiful clothes, and doing photoshoots. So I thought, ‘Yes, I dreamed of this once before, and I should give it a try.'”
