Jakarta, Indonesias Sentinel — A Christmas market in Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt in central Germany, became the site of tragedy when a car struck a crowd, killing two people and injuring at least 68 others.
According to reports from Al Jazeera, authorities described the incident on Friday evening as a deliberate attack. The driver was detained at the scene, and investigations are ongoing.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his condolences shortly after the attack. His office announced plans for him to visit the site on Saturday.
“The reports from Magdeburg are harrowing. My thoughts are with the victims and their families,” Scholz posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We stand in solidarity with the people of Magdeburg. My gratitude goes to the dedicated emergency responders in these distressing times.”
Suspect Identified as Saudi National
Tamara Zieschang, Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister of the Interior, identified the suspect as a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia who has resided in Germany since 2006. The suspect was previously unknown to German security services.
State Premier Reiner Haseloff revealed that one of the deceased victims was a child, while the other was an adult. He noted that authorities believe the suspect acted alone.
“As far as we know, he was the sole perpetrator, and there is no ongoing threat to the city,” Haseloff stated during a press briefing on Saturday.
Extent of the Injuries
Among the injured, 15 people are in critical condition, 37 sustained moderate injuries, and 16 suffered minor injuries, according to Magdeburg’s official website.
Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle involved was traveling at high speed before plowing into the crowd at around 7 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT).
Historical Significance of Christmas Markets
Christmas markets are a cherished tradition in German-speaking regions, dating back to the Middle Ages. In Magdeburg, a city with a population of approximately 240,000, the market is held in the town square, featuring stalls offering regional food, drinks, and crafts.
“This is a horrific tragedy. It’s a catastrophe for the city of Magdeburg, the state, and the German people as a whole,” Haseloff remarked.
