Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — OpenAI has announced a sharp rise in ChatGPT user base at the start of 2025. As of February, the AI-powered chatbot has surpassed 400 million weekly active users, marking a significant increase in adoption.
A spokesperson for OpenAI shared the update on Friday, February 21. According to TechCrunch, OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT had around 300 million users in December 2024. In just two months, its weekly active user base surged by more than 100 million, reaching 400 million.
However, OpenAI has not disclosed specific details regarding the number of paid subscribers for its ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro services.
Alongside the surge in active users, OpenAI has also seen growth in its business subscription plans. By February, the number of paying business customers had exceeded 2 million, doubling from September 2024. In additions, OpenAI reported that developer traffic for its API has also doubled over the past six months.
The latest figures come as competition in the AI chatbot market continues to intensify. Despite the growing number of chatbot applications, ChatGPT remains the most widely used AI assistant.
The data also reflects OpenAI’s optimism amid the rise of DeepSeek, a chatbot developed in China that has gained global popularity since January 2024, including in the United States.
DeepSeek has been marketed as a more advanced alternative to ChatGPT. However, its rapid adoption has been met with privacy concerns, raising doubts about its long-term viability.
Deep Research Feature
Despite the competition, OpenAI remains committed to innovation, continually enhancing its chatbot’s capabilities. Recently, the company introduced “Deep Research,” a new feature designed to assist users with complex and in-depth research.

In a blog post published by the company, OpenAI stated that the feature is tailored for professionals in finance, science, policy, and engineering who require comprehensive data analysis and insights.
