Bandung, Indonesia Sentinel — Travel has become a popular way for people to unwind and take a break from their busy lives. Recently, tourism experts have highlighted a new trend on the horizon for travelers: JOMO. But what exactly is it?
According to booking platform Vrbo, by 2025, most travelers will move past the anxiety of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) on their vacations. Instead, they will embrace the trend of the Joy of Missing Out (JOMO).
Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is a psychological phenomenon that refers to the anxiety or apprehension people feel when they believe others are having rewarding experiences that they are not a part of. On the other hand, Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) is a counter-trend
Vrbo explains that JOMO allows people to travel at their own pace, choosing experiences that align with their personal desires rather than what might be popular online. JOMO encourages travelers to take an optimistic and minimalist approach to their trips, prioritizing relaxation over the pressure to keep up with the latest social media trends.
“JOMO travel encourages tourists to engage in fewer activities during their vacation, opting for a cozy cabin or a peaceful beach house to boost relaxation and reconnect with loved ones,” Vrbo stated in its latest report, published Monday, November 4, 2024.

Adopting JOMO means focusing on the present and enjoying each moment of travel without the stress of trying to fit in multiple destinations or activities driven by FOMO. This trend is seen as healthier for tourists, freeing them from the need to follow viral moments and “being controlled by FYPs (For Your Page) and algorithms.”
How to Embrace JOMO Travel
The key to experiencing JOMO travel is to plan vacations or pick destinations that truly resonate with your preferences, not what is trending on social media.
This approach involves setting your itinerary based on what you genuinely want to do. It also includes seeking out locations that are off the beaten path and away from the crowds. This not only provides a more peaceful getaway but also offers the chance to explore unique, unconventional spots that deliver a fresh travel experience.
