Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Google Labs, the experimental division of the tech giant, has unveiled an innovative and entertaining spin on the timeless game of chess. The newly launched GenChess website allows players to design custom chess pieces using generative AI, offering a unique fusion of technology, creativity, and strategy.
Powered by Google’s Gemini Imagen 3 image-generation model, GenChess enables players to create personalized chess sets by typing text prompts. Users can choose between two styles: “classic,” which closely resembles traditional chess pieces, and “creative,” where the designs are more abstract and imaginative.
According to Google, the feature is designed to combine AI-driven insights with the enduring appeal of chess. “It shows the collaboration between AI, design, and chess, making it possible for anyone to play with image generation,” a Google spokesperson told TechCrunch.
Design Custom Chess Piece
Before the game starts, players have the option to edit their individual chess pieces. Players can describe what their white chess pieces should look like through a text prompt, then it’ll be generated by its Imagen 3 AI model. If the chess piece doesn’t meet expectations, users can continue to add prompts to refine its appearance.
Once satisfied with their custom creations, they can generate an opponent’s set and start the game. While the gameplay mechanics are functional, the platform lacks some of the advanced features found in dedicated chess apps.
Players can only select between three difficulty levels (easy, medium, and hard) and two timer options (5/3 or 10/0). Players also cannot review past moves or track captured pieces.
However, the game’s offer isometric board view in the settings, adds a visually striking element aside from chess traditional layout of a top-down view.
Why Yogyakarta Stands Alone in Indonesia Without a Gubernatorial Election?
The launch of GenChess coincides with the 2024 World Chess Championship, which began on Monday, November 25. As the event’s main sponsor, Google is using the championship as a platform to showcase its chess-related innovations.
In addition to GenChess, Google has announced the upcoming release of Chess Champ, an interactive chess feature within its Gemini app. Slated for launch in December, Chess Champ will allow Gemini Advanced subscribers to play against a language model, explore strategies, and engage in lighthearted banter.
With these initiatives, Google continues to demonstrate the potential of AI to enhance and reinvent traditional games, offering new ways for players to engage with the timeless art of chess.
