Bogor, Indonesia Sentinel — A fatal crash occurred at the Ciawi Toll Gate in Bogor Regency, West Java, on Tuesday night (February 4, 2024). The incident was reportedly caused by a truck suffered brake failure, triggering a multi-vehicle collision that resulted in multiple casualties.
Bogor City Police Chief, Commissioner Eko Prasetyo, stated that the accident took place on the Bogor-Jakarta Toll Road at Gate Ciawi 2 around 11:30 PM local time on Tuesday night. The truck, which carrying gallon containers, was heading from Ciawi toward Jakarta, lost its brakes as it approached the toll gate.
The fatal crash has caused severe damage to the Ciawi toll gate structure and multiple vehicles. Videos circulating on social media showed several vehicles engulfed in flames following the collision, while some cars were overturned near the Ciawi Toll Gate.
“The vehicle allegedly suffered brake failure and crashed into a line of vehicles waiting at the toll payment booths. Three vehicles were completely burned, while three others were severely damaged,” Commissioner Eko noted,on Wednesday, February 5, as reported by Merdeka.
Casualties and Evacuation Efforts
Head of the Bogor City Traffic Police Unit, Commissioner Yudiono, confirmed that authorities had cleared all vehicles involved in the crash from the toll road. All victims were rushed to Ciawi Regional General Hospital (RSUD Ciawi).
“All victims have been evacuated and taken to the hospital. The damaged vehicles have been removed, leaving only scattered gallon containers at the scene,” he stated.
The tragic crash claimed the lives of eight people and left eleven others injured. “The latest count shows eight fatalities and eleven injured victims,” Commissioner Eko added.
The truck driver remains unconscious due to injuries sustained in the accident. “The driver is still unconscious,” said Commissioner Yudiono.
Toll Gate Reopened After Temporary Closure
Following the fatal crash incident, the Ciawi 2 Toll Gate toward Jakarta was temporarily closed. PT Jasa Marga, the toll road operator, announced that some booths at the Ciawi Toll Gate had reopened after the evacuation process, while cleanup efforts continued.
“At the moment, the left-side booths are operational, but the right-side ones remain closed. Six toll booths have been reopened, but some lanes are still undergoing maintenance,” said Jasa Marga call center officer Sukar on Wednesday (February 5, 2025), as reported by Merdeka.

The cleanup operation remains ongoing, with authorities working to remove debris from the scene. “The process is still underway, though some areas have been cleared. Debris removal is still in progress,” he added.
Jasa Marga also provided updates via their official X (formerly Twitter) account: “06:00 AM WIB #Tol_Jagorawi GT Ciawi 2 booths 05, 03, and 01 toward Jakarta TEMPORARILY CLOSED for repairs. Use the left lanes at booths 07, 09, 11, and 13. Please drive carefully and remain orderly in the queue.”
