Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — As global population growth continues, the world’s total population is nearing 8.1 billion, according to the latest data from the United States Census Bureau. Among the country in the world, Indonesia ranks 4th as most populous countries in 2024.
The global population continues to grow at a significant pace, with several countries recording massive population figures. This surge has far-reaching implications on various aspects of life, including the economy, society, and politics.
The United Nations (UN) projects that the world’s population will increase by 2 billion over the next 30 years, reaching an estimated 9.7 billion by 2050. With this growth, the populations of several countries are also rising, with some nations now exceeding 1 billion people.
Most Populous Country
According to data from World Population Review, India has overtaken China as the world’s most populous country, with 1.45 billion people. The UN had previously predicted that India would surpass China due to its steady population growth. India’s population grew by 0.89% from 2023 when it stood at 1.438 billion.
India’s population growth is driven by high fertility rates and a rapidly expanding young demographic. As a result, many young couples are having more than two children, further accelerating the country’s population increase.
China now ranks second with 1.419 billion people, marking a slight decline from 1.422 billion in 2023. This represents a negative growth rate of -0.23% in 2024. China previously had a larger population than India, but its numbers have declined due to the one-child policy, which was implemented to curb birth rates.
The United States remains the third-most populous country, with 345 million people, reflecting a 0.57% increase from the 343 million recorded in 2023. Although its population is significantly lower than the top two countries, the United States remains the third most populous nation in the world. With its large population, the U.S. is the most densely populated country in the Americas, and New York City is among the most crowded urban centers globally.
Indonesia ranks fourth, with a population of 283 million in 2024. The country experienced a 0.82% increase from 281 million the previous year. With a land area of 1.9 million square kilometers, Indonesia is the most populous country in Southeast Asia and ranks as the fourth most populous nation in the world.
