Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto and President of South Africa Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa held a bilateral meeting over a working lunch at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. Both leaders underscored the importance of enhancing economic collaboration and amplifying the role of Global South nations in shaping a more equitable international order.
In his opening remarks, President Ramaphosa expressed appreciation for the longstanding ties between Indonesia and South Africa, recalling Indonesia’s significant support during South Africa’s struggle against apartheid, a movement inspired by the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung.
“For decades, the people of South Africa have found a steadfast ally in Indonesia, which consistently supported our struggle against apartheid. We will always be grateful for the solidarity and friendship of the Indonesian people,” Ramaphosa said.
The South African leader also highlighted the economic opportunities within the BRICS framework, viewing it as a platform for promoting inclusive global reform. He welcomed Indonesia’s growing engagement with BRICS nations and encouraged deeper economic cooperation that could serve as a catalyst for bilateral growth.
“The BRICS economic partnership holds immense potential to drive development and transformation in our countries. We encourage Indonesia’s deeper participation across BRICS structures, particularly in advancing economic cooperation,” Ramaphosa added.
President Ramaphosa emphasized that Indonesia–South Africa relations are grounded in shared values and collective aspirations to tackle pressing social challenges such as unemployment, poverty, and inequality. He called for greater inclusion of marginalized communities in economic activities to ensure more equitable growth.
“By participation, I mean creating greater opportunities for those who have long been excluded to truly take part in the economy,” he said.

During the meeting, Ramaphosa also commended Indonesia’s active role in international forums, including the G20, where South Africa serves as this year’s host. He welcomed President Prabowo’s plan to attend the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, viewing Indonesia’s presence as vital for strengthening the collective voice of Global South nations.
“We are delighted that Your Excellency will participate in the G20 Leaders’ Summit later this month. Indonesia’s presence is crucial, it elevates the significance of the G20, especially when key nations from the Global South, like Indonesia and South Africa, take part in such global forums,” Ramaphosa stated.
