Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China has garnered international attention as infections surge. In response, Indonesia’s Ministry of Health has urged the public to remain calm while staying vigilant and maintaining health protocols to reduce the risk of transmission.
Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) spokesperson Widyawati stated that no HMPV cases have been detected in Indonesia so far. “Currently, there are no reported HMPV cases in Indonesia,” Widyawati said in an official statement on Saturday, Januari 4, 2025, as reported by CNBC Indonesia.
“However, we urge the public to maintain healthy and clean living habits, this is essential to strengthen immunity and prevent the spread of viruses that could pose health risks,” she added.
The Indonesian government continues to monitor the HMPV situation in China and other affected countries. Widyawati emphasized that precautionary measures include heightened surveillance at entry points, particularly monitoring international travelers exhibiting Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) symptoms.
“We will maintain close coordination with relevant authorities to ensure effective preventive measures. These efforts are aimed at preventing the virus from entering Indonesia,” she said.
No Travel Restrictions to China Yet
Indonesia has not yet imposed any travel restrictions or tightened border controls for travel to and from China despite the ongoing HMPV outbreak.
Widyawati explained that the government is currently focused on surveillance, monitoring, and reporting to prevent the virus from entering Indonesia. She also reminded Indonesians traveling to China to adhere to strict health protocols.
“At this stage, no travel restrictions to or from China are deemed necessary,” Widyawati said on Friday, January 3, as reported by CNN Indonesia.
HMPV Outbreak in China
HMPV infections have surged in China in recent weeks. According to China’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cases spiked between December 16 and December 22, 2024.
Authorities reported a significant increase in infections among children under the age of 14, with northern provinces being the most affected. Symptoms of HMPV closely resemble those of COVID-19, including respiratory distress and flu-like signs.
