Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia has teamed up with U.S. tech giant Oracle to establish what is expected to be the largest artificial intelligence (AI) center in Southeast Asia, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s digital sovereignty and enhancing its global tech competitiveness.
Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid announced that Oracle is set to launch a public cloud region in Indonesia by the third quarter of 2025. The facility will serve as an advanced data center capable of supporting large-scale AI workloads while ensuring national data security and digital sovereignty.
“We don’t want Indonesia to be just a consumer, we aim to become a regional hub for AI development in Southeast Asia,” Hafid said in a press release following a meeting with Oracle’s Senior Vice President for Japan and Asia Pacific, Chris Chelliah, on Tuesday (May 6).
“The GPU cluster Oracle will build is a critical foundation for our national AI ecosystem. It will strengthen our digital capacity and open major opportunities for innovation.”
Beyond infrastructure, the partnership also includes human capital development, with plans to train students, professionals, and government workers in AI. The ministry is targeting AI education for more than 100,000 Indonesians over the next three years, underlining its belief that sustained digital transformation requires a highly skilled workforce.

Chelliah described Indonesia as a strategic market with the potential to lead the region in AI. “Oracle is not just bringing technology and capital, we’re building infrastructure tailored to local needs, from data security to a sustainable digital ecosystem,” he said.
Oracle has been present in Indonesia for over three decades. This latest investment marks a significant expansion, with the upcoming cloud region featuring massive GPU clusters designed to handle high-intensity AI computing. These capabilities are expected to play a vital role in sectors ranging from public services to creative industries.
As a next step, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs and Oracle will form a joint working group to draft a national AI development roadmap focused on inclusivity and global competitiveness.
