Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia is set to have its largest floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, and the ninth largest in the world, according to the country’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia.

The announcement came after Bahlil’s visit on Wednesday (June 11) to two major gas facilities which is the Genting Oil Kasuri and LNG Tangguh, both located in Teluk Bintuni, West Papua Province.

Therefore, the FLNG was a facilities that allow for the production, liquefaction, and storage of natural gas at sea, eliminating the need for extensive onshore infrastructure.

According to report from Genting Oil Kasuri’s management, construction of the FLNG has reached 53% completion. Bahlil said he plans to dispatch a team to inspect the ongoing work.

In June 2024, Genting Group, through its subsidiary PT Layar Nusantara Gas, signed a deal with Wison New Energies to procure the FLNG unit. The facility, valued at $962.8 million. The Floating LNG Facility will have an annual capacity of 1.2 million metric tons.

The floating LNG platform will be supplied with gas from the Asap Kido Merah (AKM) project operated by Genting Oil Kasuri. Bahlil highlighted that the company is projected to produce 330 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas beginning in 2027.

“Out of five wells opened, four are fully completed, and the remaining one is about 30% done. As for the base camp construction, it’s around 20 to 22% complete,” he noted.

Bahlil emphasized the significance of the project in helping Indonesia mitigate a potential national gas supply deficit in the coming years.
