Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Telecommunications traffic in Indonesia surged during the Christmas holiday season, aligning with earlier predictions by the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi). Among the traffic aspects, gaming services shows the most significant spike.
“Telecom traffic has increased by an average of 7–20%, based on reports from cellular operators,” said Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Angga Raka Prabowo while monitoring network performance at Pasar Senen Station in Central Jakarta on Friday, December 27, as reported by Detik Net.
“Our task, alongside cellular operators, is to ensure the quality of service remains stable and reliable for the public,” he added.
Dany Suwardany, Director of Postal and Informatics Control at Komdigi, previously predicted an increase in telecom traffic during the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) period compared to the previous year. To address this surge, the ministry coordinated with operators.
“We have issued directives to telecom operators, urging them to strengthen network capacity to handle the traffic spike,” Dany said during an inspection of the Telecommunications, Postal, and Broadcasting Monitoring Center on Tuesday (December 24).
In addition to enhancing network capacity, Komdigi conducted quality of service (QoS) measurements at key points of interest (POIs), including shopping malls, transportation hubs, tourist destinations, places of worship, and toll roads such as Jakarta-Surabaya and Jakarta-Palembang routes.
Telkomsel Traffic Trends
At the same event, Indrawan Gitapradana, Director of Human Capital Management at Telkomsel, also reported a notable increase in traffic on December 25, 2024, with figures closely aligning with earlier predictions.
“We initially forecasted an increase of 7–20%, and current data shows an average rise of 12–15%,” Indrawan said.
The company measured four key traffic aspects: data usage, video streaming, social media, and gaming. The highest increases were observed in the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek) and West Java, with gaming services seeing the most significant spike.
“During the Christmas holidays, it seems many users stayed home, resulting in higher gaming traffic. However, data usage across other services remained relatively consistent,” Indrawan explained.
South Korea Officially Becomes a ‘Super-Aged’ Society
Looking ahead to New Year’s Eve celebrations, Telkomsel anticipates another surge in internet traffic. The company has identified 409 critical POIs requiring enhanced network reliability.
“We’ve taken special measures, including allocating additional bandwidth reserves, to ensure we can handle the expected surge in traffic seamlessly,” Indrawan concluded.
The proactive measures by Komdigi and telecom operators highlight Indonesia’s efforts to maintain reliable digital connectivity during peak holiday seasons.
