Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for potential Tidal flooding or “rob flood” in 17 regions across the country from February 24 to March 5, 2025.
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast potential coastal flooding, in 17 regions across the country, including the coastal areas of Riau Islands, West Sumatra, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, South Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, and Papua.
“This situation is triggered by the occurrence of a new moon on February 28, 2025, and a Perigee which is a celestial phenomenon where the moon is at its closest point to Earth on March 1, 2025. Which potentially increase maximum sea levels,” BMKG said in an official statement on Sunday (February 23), as reported by Tempo.
Regions at Risk
According to Tempo, BMKG has identified the following coastal areas as vulnerable to tidal flood during the specified period:
Riau Islands: coastal flooding is expected in Dabo Singkep from February 24–27, Karimun from February 26–March 3, Bintan from February 28–March 3, and Tanjung Pinang from February 27–March 4, 2025.
West Sumatra: the affected areas in West SUmatra include Padang, Padang Pariaman, and Painan, with potential flooding on February 28.
Banten: tidal flooding is forecasted in North Sunda Strait on February 28, while Pandeglang and South Lebak could be impacted on February 27–28.
Bangka Belitung Island: flooding may occur in Pangkalpinang, West Bangka, and Bangka from February 26–March 2.
Jakarta: Jakarta is also at risk with potential flooding in Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Pluit, Ancol, Marunda, Cilincing, Tanjung Priok, Kalibaru, Muara Angke, and Penjaringan from February 24–26.
West Java: coastal flooding could affect Bekasi, Karawang, Subang, and Indramayu from February 24–26.
Central Java: areas including Semarang, Demak, Pekalongan, Brebes, Tegal, and Pemalang are at risk from February 24–26.
East Java: tidal flooding is expected in Surabaya (Tanjung Perak, Krembangan, and Kenjeran), Gresik, and Lamongan from February 24–28.
West Nusa Tenggara (NTB): Lombok and Bima are projected to experience coastal flooding on February 28.
Kalimantan: flooding may affect Kotabaru from February 26–March 6, while Sebuai, Keraya, Kubu, and Kumai could see high tides from February 24–28.
North Sulawesi: Likupang, the Sangihe Islands, and the Talaud Islands may experience tidal flooding from February 26–March 5.
Maluku: flooding is expected from February 28–March 6, while North Maluku could be affected from February 26–March 4.
Papua: northern coastal areas, including Jayapura and Sarmi Regency, are at risk from February 28–March 4, while South Papua may experience flooding from February 27–March 7, 2025.

Precautionary Measures
BMKG advises residents in affected coastal areas to avoid seaside activities during high tides, secure valuable belongings in safe locations, and stay updated through official BMKG and local government channels.
The agency urges communities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as high tides could lead to property damage and disrupt daily activities in low-lying coastal regions.
