Bandung, Indonesia Sentinel — Parahyangan Catholic University (Unpar) in Bandung, Indonesia, received a bomb threat on Friday, November 15, 2024. The threat was delivered via a letter circulated widely on the social media platform X, purportedly sent by a group identifying itself as Jamaah Ansharut Daulah from Astana Anyar.
Addressed to the university’s rector, Professor Tri Basuki Joewono, PhD, the letter demanded the cancellation of Unpar’s graduation ceremonies scheduled for November 15-17, 2024. The sender claimed to have planted explosive devices, including pressure cooker bombs and plastic explosives, in the second-floor auditorium of the Arntz-Geise Learning Center, the main venue for the event.
“You have only one choice. Cancel the event along with any related activities. Do not attempt inspections, scanning, or worse, involve law enforcement,” the letter warned.
Immediate Response
Parahyangan Catholic University authorities swiftly coordinated with local police following the threat. The bomb squad (Gegana) from the Mobile Brigade Corps arrived shortly after and conducted a thorough sweep of the campus.
In an official statement, the university assured the community that measures were being taken to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors. “Coordination with relevant authorities is ongoing to secure the campus through comprehensive inspections,” the statement read.
Unpar emphasized the importance of maintaining academic and non-academic activities, particularly the graduation ceremony, while prioritizing the safety of all attendees.
