Indonesia’s Weather Agency Issues Tidal Flood Warning Amid Lunar Tides

Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for potential tidal flood or rob. The flood expected to affect several coastal regions across the country, including the northern coastline of Jakarta and other areas along Java’s northern seaboard.

In a public advisory released Monday (July 14), BMKG said the warning is driven by two lunar phenomena: the Perigee, when the moon is closest to Earth (occurring on July 20, 2025) and the New Moon phase (on July 24, 2025). These celestial events are likely to raise sea levels and increase the risk of tidal flooding in low-lying coastal areas.

“This potential coastal flooding may disrupt activities in harbor zones and coastal settlements, including cargo loading and unloading operations, residential areas, salt farming, and aquaculture,” the agency said in its official statement.
