Jakarta, Indonesias Sentinel — Indonesian Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, has addressed why the government is holding back Apple from directly selling its latest product, the iPhone 16, in Indonesia.
During a meeting of the National Team for the Use of Domestic Products (P3DN), Agus explained that Apple has not yet met the government’s regulatory requirements.
“The issue circulating in the public regarding Apple’s iPhone 16 not being available in the Indonesian market is because it is still in the process of obtaining the required Domestic Content Certificate (TKDN),” said Agus in Jakarta on Tuesday (October 8, 2024).
According to Regulation No. 29 of 2017 issued by the Ministry of Industry, the calculation of the TKDN for smartphones, handheld computers, and tablets can be done using three schemes: local manufacturing, local application development, or local innovation development.
“In Apple’s case, the chosen scheme is through local innovation development,” Agus said.
Unfortunately, Apple’s previous TKDN certification has expired, meaning they no longer have the authorization to sell their products until the certification is renewed.
“Apple had previously obtained a TKDN certificate, but it has now expired and must be extended,” he added.

This TKDN requirement is crucial for companies wanting to import and sell mobile devices in Indonesia, as it ensures a certain level of local value in the production or innovation process. Until Apple resolves the TKDN certification, the iPhone 16 will remain unavailable for purchase in the Indonesian market.
