Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Jakarta provincial government has issued an early warning “Jakarta Siaga” for extreme weather, urging residents to prepare for potential flooding amid forecasts of heavy rainfall from March 11 to March 20, 2025.
“Jakarta Alert Warning for March 11-20, 2025. Extreme weather and heavy rainfall are expected to increase,” the provincial government announced on its official Instagram account on Monday (March 10, 2025).
Authorities warned that floods could occur if daily rainfall exceeds 150 mm. “If rainfall exceeds 150 mm per day, flooding is likely to occur,” the announcement stated, citing data from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
Mitigation Effort
To mitigate the impact of extreme weather, especially flood, the Jakarta government has taken several precautionary measures. Immediate measures including weather modification, while long-term efforts including dredging of rivers and reservoirs, and river normalization.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said he had instructed authorities to begin weather modification operations (WMO) earlier than usual to anticipate heavy rainfall from March 11-20. His directive followed discussions with BMKG chief Dwikorita Karnawati.
“Tomorrow’s rainfall is expected to be at its peak, so we will intensify weather modification efforts. I have specifically asked the Jakarta Water Resources Agency to start the modification earlier so that we can manage the situation from the outset,” Pramono stated.
According to the governor, Jakarta has already been implementing weather modification in phases, aiming to divert rainfall toward offshore areas to minimize flooding in the city.

Brace for Flood
Meanwhile, the head of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General Suharyanto, also confirmed forecasts of heavy rain from March 10-20. He said integrated WMO operations would continue to minimize potential disasters in Jakarta, particularly severe flooding.
“We expect even heavier rainfall from March 10-20. Hopefully, this integrated WMO effort can reduce precipitation levels in key areas, preventing further severe flooding,” Suharyanto said in a written statement.
In addition to government-led efforts, authorities urged residents to remain vigilant. Residents have been advised to immediately called the emergency hotline 112 in case of extreme weather-related emergencies.
As extreme weather predicted to persist across Jakarta, the Provincial Government urged residents to prepare emergency kits, identify the nearest evacuation points, and stay updated with the latest weather information.
