Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — A job advertisement allegedly recruiting an online gambling admin to work in Cambodia has gone viral on the social media platform X. The post gained attention due to its presence on the well-known job portal, JobStreet.
The controversy began when an Indonesian social media user shared their experience of applying for a position advertised as “Customer Service Executive” on JobStreet, which later raised suspicions. According to Detik Finance, the post has been viewed over 1.6 million times, garnered 24,000 likes and 4,300 reposts, sparking widespread discussion.
Suspicious Job Ad
The user on X, claimed to have applied for the position, which was listed under the company name “Trend Network Technology Sdn. Bhd.” The company was described as a foreign-based organization with a Jakarta office.
The job opening, advertised in Jakarta, offered a monthly salary ranging from Rp13 million to Rp18 million and had been listed on JobStreet for over 30 days.
The advertisement outlined several responsibilities, including resolving issues and addressing customer complaints via online chats, social media, and other communication channels, as well as building relationships with both new and existing clients.
After submitting application, the company sent an email that appeared professional and legitimate. Following the email exchange, the applicant was contacted via WhatsApp by someone claiming to be from the company’s HR department.
However, the questions posed during the preliminary interview raised red flags, including inquiries about willingness to relocate to Cambodia, work night shifts, and operate in a casino environment.
Seeking clarification, the applicant attempted to verify the company’s legitimacy by contacting its official customer service through the website. They discovered that the company had no active job postings on JobStreet, contradicting the ad they had seen.
Adding to the skepticism, the applicant used ChatGPT to gather information about the company, uncovering reports of dubious employment practices linked to similar cases.
JobStreet Responds
JobStreet confirmed that the job advertisement for a “Customer Service Executive” by Trend Network Technology Sdn. Bhd. had indeed been listed on its platform. However, after receiving reports of potential high-risk recruitment practices, the platform suspended the job listing and deactivated the company’s account due to a lack of response to their inquiries.
“In its initial review, the job description for the Customer Service Executive position did not indicate any violations or risks,” said Adham Somantrie, Head of Social & PR at JobStreet by SEEK Indonesia, in a statement on Saturday, January 11, 2025, as reported by Detik Finance.
He emphasized that the suspected fraudulent activities occurred outside JobStreet’s platform during direct interactions between the company and candidates. “JobStreet and SEEK cannot monitor or oversee recruitment processes conducted outside the platform,” Adham added.
